History preserved and reinvented
Located in the Napier Art Deco Heritage Zone, this large, inner city redevelopment site originally contained a featureless 1980’s concrete block structure which was demolished, together with the partial demolition of two historic registered buildings, the Odeon Theatre and Callinicos Restaurant. Incorporating historically significant elements of the Odeon Theatre and Callinicos frontages ensured the visual co-ordination of the ubiquitous ‘big box retail’ assembly is arranged appropriately. The original Art Deco frieze design from the theatre’s Marine Parade was expressed as a tie, wrapped around the upper walls of the total development. The colours of the retained facades of the Odeon Theatre and Callinicos buildings have been replicated to those last known to exist in these areas, while other colours are Farmers standard identifiers.
